HOW TO PLAN PENDANT LIGHTING
Start with the layout and the work zones. Islands, tables, and sinks need focused light, while the room still benefits from a calm base level. Use a broader layer from ceiling lights for even coverage, then add pendants to shape the scene and highlight surfaces. If you want a single focal point in an adjacent area, compare statement pieces in chandeliers.
Island rules of thumb: Hang pendants about 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Space fixtures roughly 24 to 30 inches apart and keep about 6 to 12 inches from each island end. For layouts and spacing examples, see our kitchen island lighting guide. If you are choosing shades and bulb types for different tasks, read the kitchen pendant lighting guide.
Dining tables: Size the fixture to about one half to two thirds of the table width, or one half to three quarters of the table length for linear bars, and suspend it about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Keep lines of sight clear across the seating group so conversation feels relaxed.
Glass and glare: Clear glass reads bright and crisp. Opal or frosted glass softens points of light, which is helpful near eye level. Keep a single color temperature through the space. 3000 to 3500 K feels clean and accurate in kitchens and dining rooms and still looks warm at night.
Controls and compatibility: Most integrated and bulb based LED pendants can dim. Match the driver type listed in the specs with a compatible wall control, for example TRIAC, ELV, or 0 to 10 V, for smooth range without flicker.
Quick guidelines
- Ceiling height: use short stems for standard rooms and longer drops for tall spaces.
- Sightlines: center the group to the main view so shades do not block faces at seated height.
- Finish plan: repeat one metal tone on hardware and lighting for a cohesive look.
